Michelle’s Story

Originally from Big Rapids, Michigan, Michelle Vanhala attended Central Michigan University as a double major in both Integrated Sciences and English for Secondary Education on a full-ride academic scholarship. In 2014, she was named a Knowles Teaching Fellow through the Knowles Teacher Initiative. She completed a Masters of Science in Science Education through the University of Michigan, Dearborn in 2017 with a focus on project-based learning and inquiry. After several years of teaching chemistry, physics, and biology at Tecumseh High School in rural southeastern MI, she transitioned to her current role as a science teacher, academic advisor, and instructional coach at Washtenaw Technical Middle College in Ann Arbor. In 2020, she was recognized as the Michigan Science Teachers Association Teacher of Promise and she achieved National Board Certification in Biology in 2022. She also works part time as a tutor, National Board candidate support coach, and Knowles Course Developer. On a personal note, she enjoys working out in Orange Theory Fitness classes on a regular basis, traveling whenever she has the chance, and reading in her free time.

After 11 years in the classroom, Michelle still looks forward to working with students, collaborating with colleagues, and designing authentic learning experiences every day. She sees herself as a lifelong learner, and will continue to reflect, grow, and advocate for her students everyday.
