I want my students to see themselves as problem solvers. I want them to know that with perseverance and hard work, they can accomplish whatever they set their minds to.”

Lynn’s Story

Teaching Discipline

Mathematics

Why Mathematics

“I get a lot of joy out of doing math and helping others to understand it so that they can feel that same joy. There is a lot of fear and anxiety surrounding math, and I want to help show people that mathematics is really beautiful and such a powerful tool.”

Professional Experience

Lynn began teaching during her high school education, where she worked as a peer tutor for three years. She tutored students in Algebra I and II, as well as College Algebra. Later, she worked as a learning assistant at Oregon State University for two years, teaching College Algebra, Linear Algebra, and Differential Calculus. In addition, she spent six months working at Silverton High School as an education assistant and later took over as a long-term substitute math teacher for the remainder of the year. She has also worked with SUMMIT-P as a researcher, where she studied the qualities of math problems that make them more engaging for students. This research has been incredibly valuable to Lynn, as making mathematics more meaningful and engaging is a passion of hers.

Lynn will begin her first year of teaching mathematics at Nevada Union High School in Grass Valley, California, during the 2023–2024 school year.

Hobbies

In her free time, Lynn enjoys spending time outside gardening and crocheting. She also spends time volunteering at the Nevada County Pets in Need Thrift Store and is soon to be named their board’s treasurer.
