“I have always enjoyed doing math with others, especially as I’ve grown to understand the deeply rooted structures that underlie my grade school knowledge. Math is a joyful subject that is best explored through collaboration between students, teachers, parents, and community activists. Moreover, I believe that math literacy is crucial for fighting injustices that are often complicated by and encoded in mathematical language.”
Professional Experience
During her undergraduate studies, Emily spent two years teaching math to students in grades one through four at Berkeley Math Circle Elementary. She also spent a summer working with the Yleana Leadership Academy, teaching college preparatory courses and SAT prep. Most recently, she taught Algebra Success and Algebra II at Oakland High School.
Emily will begin her third year of teaching mathematics at Oakland High School during the 2023–2024 school year.
Hobbies
In her free time, Emily enjoys crocheting—a hobby she learned from a student — while listening to an audiobook. She loves to read and play games of all kinds, including puzzles, Dungeons and Dragons, and video games. Additionally, Emily has two cats that she adores.
