Through this Knowles Academy course, teachers will learn about a four-level empowered engineering framework that highlights how engineering integration in science and math can help students develop a more meaningful understanding of designing just solutions to engineering challenges.

Engineering for Student and Community Empowerment

Integrating the engineering design process into math and science classes is a powerful way to promote equitable teaching practices and culturally relevant learning. In this professional development course, teachers will learn about a four-level empowered engineering framework that highlights how engineering integration in science and math can help students develop a more meaningful understanding of designing just solutions to engineering challenges. Participants will work to take a rich engineering project and associate it with a community issue and its implications, and imagine how science and math instruction can create a more meaningful understanding of the selected community issue. The course will highlight three community empowerment through-lines of the engineering design process: uncovering values, students as agents of change, and stakeholders and encouraging voices. Facilitated by teachers who are experienced in integrating engineering into math and science classes, this course will support teachers in identifying entry points in their curriculum for integrating engineering and community issues.
