Can Engaging in Science Practices Promote Deep Understanding of Them?

Engaging students in scientific inquiry activities, rather than isolated procedures, is expected to improve their understanding of scientific norms, goals, and values. We tested this by involving a science class in an extended problem-based activity. Compared to a control group, participating students demonstrated advanced investigation, analysis, argumentation skills, and superior epistemological understanding.
