Why Science

“As a high school science teacher, I am able to not only teach my students about the subject of science, but also about the scientific process in a meaningful way. I try to encourage my students to see themselves as scientists by helping them to ask their own questions about the world around them and to think rigorously and creatively about some of the problems we face today.”

Professional Experience

Mary Clare was afforded the opportunity to co-teach an 11th-grade chemistry class at a D.C. charter school through Georgetown’s RISE & Teach program. During her junior year, Mary Clare worked as a Teaching Assistant for the university’s Foundations of Biology course. Seeing the enthusiasm and excitement of the freshmen in her lab section reminded her of why she fell in love with biology in the first place.

In 2013, she worked as the Lead Instructor for the “Junior M.D.” class at the Tech Summer Camps at the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, Calif. Through the program, she taught students in grades four through eight about the human body.

Volunteer Experience

While in high school, Mary Clare tutored students at an all-girls, Catholic middle school. In addition to helping out with the after school “Homework Club,” she mentored a group of students in preparation for participation in the Synopsis Science Fair. She also organized a “Science Day,” which brought the students to her high school for a fun-filled day of science experiments and activities.

As an undergraduate student, Mary Clare continued tutoring middle and high school students from various D.C. public schools in science and math through the Georgetown University Math and Science Hands on Enrichment Club (GUMSHOE). Through GUMSHOE, she helped to plan an annual “Discovery Summit” day that brought students to the university for science workshops.
