Promote Sensemaking with Science & Math Practices

This professional development course is designed to support teachers who aim to increase engagement through the tasks and activities they design and/or modify for students. Through a three-day, in-person workshop, this course will help math and science teachers learn how to design and modify learning experiences for all students that are accessible and challenging and lead to a strengthened conceptual understanding of the content.  Teachers will also become more closely acquainted with the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics and Scientific Discussions. Using this resource as a framework, teachers will learn to engage more students in authentic mathematics and science in ways that are aligned with the changing landscape of education in the U.S. so that all students see themselves as doers of math and science.

  • Teachers will practice taking a learner stance and considering a variety of possible student experiences as they engage in math and/or science
  • Teachers will be able to identify and modify authentic math and/or science tasks that are cognitively demanding and accessible for all students
  • Teachers will expand their toolbox of strategies for implementing authentic tasks and engaging all students in learning science and/or math content
