Math Learning Goal Graphic Organizer
The Math Learning Goal Graphic Organizer helps math teachers move from a vague learning goal to one that’s specific enough to guide real classroom decisions. The tool is organized around two lenses: The How, which serves as a guidepost for recognizing and monitoring student progress during a lesson, and The What, which supports content-based planning decisions before teaching begins.
This graphic organizer uses three increasingly specific tiers of the same learning goal, each building on the last. A broad, general statement (e.g., “Students will understand the Pythagorean Theorem”) becomes progressively more precise, adding detail about student groupings, the actions students will take, and how they’ll demonstrate their thinking. Each tier is paired with guiding sub-questions and sample answers that clarify what students will explore, how their thinking will extend, and how they’ll communicate their reasoning.
A worked example using the Pythagorean Theorem models the full progression, showing teachers what a strong, classroom-ready learning goal looks like in practice.
