Why Biology

“I have always been fascinated by the natural world. In the biology classroom, I want to instill curiosity in my students and inspire them to explore their natural world and realize they are already scientists.”

Professional Experience

As an undergraduate student, Meghan worked as a wilderness trip leader at a summer camp. She immediately fell in love with teaching youth in the outdoors. For nine years, she worked in the outdoor education industry. Meghan particularly enjoyed leading small groups of female teens on two 45-day backpacking trips to the Brooks Range of Alaska. Though physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging, she found the experience to be highly rewarding.

After her second trip to Alaska, she decided that she wanted to impact students on a daily basis by working as a high school science teacher. Before enrolling in a teacher education program, Meghan worked as an AmeriCorps VISTA member for two and half years. As a Youth and Inclusiveness Coordinator, she engaged local youth in restoration projects and leadership training.

During the 2014–2015 academic year, she began teaching full time.

Volunteer Experience

Meghan is an active volunteer with Wildlands Restoration Volunteers. She began working with the organization in 2011 as an AmeriCorps VISTA Member. She currently volunteers as a crew leader or a crew member on ecological restoration projects that include collecting native seed to be used for future restoration projects, removing invasive plant species, repairing habitat in the high alpine tundra, and restoring trails and habitat that were damaged in fires or floods.

As an Allies in Action Facilitator for Girls, Inc., Meghan led weekly discussions with 9th- and 10th-grade girls on topics such as respect, empowerment, and conflict resolution.


Meghan enjoys hiking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing, canoeing, backpacking, gardening, and climbing trees.
