Through this Knowles Academy course, you will learn how to analyze and elevate the cognitive demand of your science lessons and tasks in order to help your students push their thinking beyond base-level recall, towards more complex analysis, construction of meaning, and productive discourse. In this one-day session, you will work in small, collaborative groups as you learn to increase the cognitive demand of the tasks in your lessons and provide more opportunities for students to talk about science—tactics that lead to an increase in student engagement and learning.

Science Tasks in the Curriculum: Exploring Cognitive Demand
By the end of the one-day session, teachers will be able to:
- Identify the cognitive demands of tasks and consider how the tasks influence students’ opportunities to learn
- Critique and plan lessons using a cognitively demanding task
- Gain experience considering the alignment of the scientific learning goal and the task, and other enactment factors
