Jim’s Story

From serving as a selection adviser to serving as a curriculum and classroom specialist for the Knowles Teacher Initiative, Jim has been affiliated with Knowles for 10 years. While remaining in his role as the district science coordinator for San Lorenzo Unified School District in California, Jim will continue to provide support for third and fourth year Teaching Fellows as a Program Officer for Teacher Development, effective September 2017. Previously, he taught biology, AP biology and honors anatomy and physiology at Arroyo High School in the San Lorenzo Unified School District for 32 years. Jim founded the Academy of Health and Medicine, a small learning community at Arroyo, and worked as director for nine years. He is currently involved in several curriculum development projects, including serving on the writing committee for the California Next Generation Science Standards framework roll outs and collaborating with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute on curriculum development. He is on the board of directors for the California Institute for Biodiversity, where he coordinates curriculum and professional development. Jim has received international recognition for his work around growth mindset and classroom culture through KQED Mindshift. He was awarded Teacher of the Year in 2008 for Alameda County, and serves on the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Education advisory board. Jim is also the co-founder of Next Generation Science Innovations (NGSI), a partnership designed to provide professional development to school districts as they move toward full implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. He regularly presents at local and national conferences sponsored by the National Science Teachers Association, the National Association of Biology Teachers, and the California Science Teachers Association.

A graduate of San Diego State University, Jim holds a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology.
