I think that students should be encouraged to discover mathematics and not to engage in a rote memorization process that has no meaning behind it.”
Carlee Hollenbeck has been amused by and fascinated with the subject of mathematics from a very young age. Her college education has inspired her to “become a mathematics educator that encourages students to find the deeper meaning in the subject.”
As a teaching assistant, Carlee used a variety of online resources to keep students interested. “It was a wonderful experience witnessing an entire classroom of students engaged in learning mathematics.”
As a teacher, Carlee plans to create an environment that is different from the conventional mathematics classroom by teaching beyond the state and national requirements.
Carlee earned a BS from Grand Valley State University, where she received the Outstanding Senior Mathematics Award. Carlee has written and edited two of the Adventures with Mathematics activity book series for the Michigan Council for Teachers of Mathematics and has assisted with implementing Family Math Nights at a local school. She is the recipient of the 2010 Mathematics and Community Service Award.
